Click here to read a story about melting vinyl siding.

My good friend Bruce is always kidding me about how good vinyl siding is, but even HE can’t deny this!

Blue Ridge Exteriors doesn’t install vinyl siding. We specialize in the installation of HardiePlank siding from James Hardie. HardiePlank is fiber cement siding and is actually FIREPROOF. It can certainly withstand reflections!

You’ve done your homework as a smart consumer. You got more than one estimate. You checked the BBB. You looked at some work the contractor has already completed and you visited a job that is currently being installed. You like the price and you like the company rep you spoke with.

What’s left to do other than sign a contract? Well, how about verifying the contractor license and insurance status?

In Virginia a contractor has 3 levels of licensing that dictates what work they can do. You should go to the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) to not only verify that the contractor still has a valid contractors license, but to also see if there are any past or current open complaints.

I bring this up now because I recently had a homeowner tell me they were signing a $30,000 contract with another company instead of Blue Ridge Exteriors. He told me he was going to have (blank) construction do the work. His price was cheaper.

It’s not the first time a homeowner has gone with the lowest price. But what really caught my attention is that the company is only a Class C contractor. By law he can’t perform the work!

I’ll save you the details of my discussion with that homeowner, but as a homeowner you have the responsibility to make sure the contractor you are planning to use is licensed and insured properly for the job they will do for you. Click here to see the different classifications of contractors in Virginia and their limitations.

While your at it you should check on their insurance status. Call their insurer to be certain all premiums have been paid. I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn that some contractors have let their insurance lapse due to money flow problems.

Blue Ridge Exteriors is a licensed Class A contractor in the state of Virginia. On EVERY appointment that we go on we leave a copy of our insurance certificate and a copy of our contractor license and we expect you will verify that all is up to date and accurate.

Blue Ridge Exteriors specializes in the installation of James Hardie fiber cement siding and trim components. We are the only James Hardie VIP Preferred Remodeler in Central Virginia and one of only six in the entire country!

For a free estimate call us at 804.405.3683!

In a recent article in the Boston Globe newspaper, Kermit Baker who is director of Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies said, “Lower financing costs are beginning to stabilize the downturn in existing home sales, as they also are reducing the cost of financing a home improvement project.”

We recently signed a contract with a homeowner who echoed the above. The homeowners told us that they had perfect credit and have wanted to have new siding and windows installed for quite some time now, but “never got around to it”. Sound familiar?

They decided that with interest rates lower than ever and with the tax credits available for replacing their old windows that now is the time to do it. In fact, their research has shown that with all incentives and lower overall costs from contractors (us) that they are saving approximately $5,550 than if they had done the work earlier.

Maybe the time is right for you too. In fact, for the 4th year in a row Remodeling Magazine says that residing your home with James Hardie fiber cement is the #1 return on investment.

Blue Ridge Exteriors specializes in residential HardiePlank siding installation. We also offer energy efficient windows that qualify for the tax credit. Call us at 804.405.3683 and let’s discuss how you can start saving money!

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a Federal Tax Credit of up to 30% of the purchase price is offered for qualifying home improvements. There is a maximun credit of $1,500.

By now we ALL know this, right?

But what isn’t always known is if the cost of installation of these products is included. The answer is maybe. According to Energy Star there are some home improvements that you can do that also include the installation costs for the tax credit. Click here to see what qualifies and what doesn’t.

Incredibly, there are home improvement companies telling people verbally AND in writing that installation costs for windows, doors, insulation and roofing are included in the tax credit. It’s NOT!

Another example of why you the consumer need to do your homework before buying.

Blue Ridge Exteriors offers windows that do qualify for the tax credits. For a no hassle estimate call us at 804.405.3683 today!

It sounds simple, but how many of you actually ask for references? A lot of consumers don’t for whatever reason. Maybe you don’t want to “insult” the company representative. Maybe you don’t want to look foolish because you’ve heard of the company…you think…and they wouldn’t be in business if they weren’t good, right?

The very first place I would look to verify that a company has experience in installing what they are trying to sell is their website. A companies’ website should provide a fuller picture of their services and qualifications. Look for actual job photos not clip art. Make sure the photos represent numerous jobs. Ask the representative questions about the pictures on the website. If they are of actual jobs that the company did then the representative should know about them.

What if a contractor has no website? Run and don’t look back!

Check the company record with the BBB. Get a copy of their contractor license. Get a copy of their insurance. Then CALL and verify that the documents are valid!

You can Google a company name and see if there is negative information about them including legal issues.

You can’t do enough to protect yourself.

Blue Ridge Exteriors specializes in the residential installation of HardiePlank siding and thermal replacement windows. Check out OUR website for all products that we offer. To get your free estimate call us at 804.405.3683

I receive a lot of emailed questions and wanted to address some of them here for you. What I’ll try to do is put a few on this blog from time to time. Maybe you’ll see an answer to a question you’ve been wanting to ask.

Q: How far from Richmond will you go to give an estimate and do a job?

A: If you were to draw a big circle around Richmond about 50 miles out in circumference that is pretty much our territory. We call it the FMZ (Fifty Mile Zone) after the popular website TMZ (Thirty Mile Zone). We’ve been known to go farther if needed.

Q: As a HardiePlank installer you could certainly handle vinyl. Why don’t you offer vinyl siding?

A: Our concept for this company was as a specialist offering high quality. Since Paul worked for James Hardie building products he saw a need and want in Central Va. for HardiePlank, but couldn’t convince the vinyl companies to sell it. But he convinced me! We didn’t want to be like the other companies that offer anything and everything to make a buck so we stick to HardiePlank. Of course we also offer energy efficient windows, replacement railings, roofing and quality trim products. We do what we do and we’re pretty good at it!

Q: I like the railings you offer, what’s the difference between the aluminum and vinyl rails?

A: Our powder coated aluminum rails look like real wood. They are a high quality custom fabricated product for your house and you can get them powder coated in virtually ANY color that you want. Our vinyl railing systems are of better quality than typical vinyl railings. You can get them in 5 colors and different styles too.

Q: I love the traveling t-shirts page on your site. Why only sporting events though?

A: Paul came up with that idea. We’re both sports nuts and he wore his shirt to a Yankees game or Red Sox game and had a picture taken and the idea took off. It’s just something fun for the website. By the way, that’s me (Matt) in the Super Bowl picture. Coolest sports event of my life! Go Steelers!

Did you also know that your credit is 30% of cost UP TO A MAXIMUM of $1,500?

There is a lot of incorrect information out there regarding the tax credit. I spoke to a couple this week who got a price from another company to replace their 18 double hung windows for just over $19,000 and were told they would get 30% of that back as a credit.

Another couple last week told me that after they were quoted just over $3,000 for 9 replacement windows the salesman said they would get $1,500 back as a tax credit.

It’s simply not accurate.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and check it our for yourself online. It’s simply too important these days to rely on potentially faulty information when buying windows only to discover you aren’t getting everything you thought you were getting. Then give us a call to get a free window quote…..You’ll be glad you did!
