I always suggest to potential customers that they check company credentials before signing a contract, but are all references unbiased?

Did you know that there are websites online that provide “unbiased” feedback on home improvement companies?  I say “unbiased” because when a company signs up for these sites, they have the opportunity to review any “bad” feedback and delete it!  You may never see it.

No matter the size and scope of the job, my suggestion is to check references you can rely on.  Go to the BBB website and see if the company has had any complaints in the past 3 years.  You can then check with DPOR (Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation) in Virginia to make sure their contractor’s license is current.

The last check I suggest is to their insurance company.  Call to make sure premium payments have been made.  When money gets tight, it’s easy for a company to skip the payments thinking that they’ll get caught up when they have more money.  If you hire a company that is not insured or underinsured, you can be ultimately responsible for any accidents that could happen on your property.

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
